The important takeaway is not the labels. It is that a single invitation can bundle a cognitive assessment with a personality questionnaire and a Situational Judgement Test, and each of those behaves very differently under the clock.

What “aptitude” actually means here

SHL’s own definition of an aptitude test is narrower than everyday use. Verify G+: The Assessment Behind Most Invitations

Verify is SHL’s range of cognitive ability assessments, and G+ is the general ability member of that range. You are constructing or arranging an answer rather than picking a letter, and that takes physical time on top of thinking time.

If you have only ever practised on multiple-choice question banks, sitting an Interactive assessment cold is an unpleasant surprise. The reasoning is the same. The interface is not.

The General Ability Screen

The third version is shorter and serves a different purpose. According to one consulted source, the General Ability Screen is a separate, shorter SHL version lasting 10 minutes, and it adds a verbal reasoning component.

That last detail is worth holding on to. Verbal Reasoning is not part of the corroborated Verify G+ description, so if your invitation mentions passages and statements, you are probably looking at the Screen or at a separate Verbal Reasoning instrument rather than at standard G+.

Reading your invitation properly

Before you practise anything, extract four facts from the invitation and the on-screen instructions: the assessment name, the number of questions, the time limit, and whether the format is multiple-choice or Interactive. If the invitation is vague, the question count and time limit shown on the introduction screen will usually resolve it. Thirty questions in 36 minutes is standard G+. Twenty-four questions in 36 minutes is Interactive G+. Ten questions in 18 minutes is a standalone Numerical Reasoning assessment, not a general ability test.

Adaptive difficulty and Item Response Theory

The published specification for G+ describes the assessment as adaptive and built on Item Response Theory. Item Response Theory is the psychometric model that underpins this design: instead of treating every question as worth the same, each item carries its own difficulty characteristics, and your ability estimate is derived from which items you got right rather than from a simple tally.

That has two practical consequences. First, a raw count of correct answers does not translate neatly into a rank, because two candidates with the same number of correct answers can have answered items of different difficulty. Mixed question order

Numerical Reasoning

SHL Numerical Reasoning measures how well you interpret numerical data presented in tables, charts and graphs, and how accurately you carry out calculations, comparisons and logical deductions from that data.

Employers use it to gauge how confidently you work with numbers in realistic work situations. Inductive Reasoning

Inductive Reasoning runs in the opposite direction. Rather than applying rules, you examine particular patterns and identify the law that governs them. SHL Inductive Reasoning asks you to spot rules in sequences of shapes, letters or numbers, and to use them to predict what comes next.

Typical formats include alphanumeric sequences and next-in-series items, where a row of figures develops according to one or more rules and you select the figure that continues it. Because the stimulus is often visual, this question family is sometimes described in the wider testing market as diagrammatic reasoning, and preparation material for diagrammatic reasoning covers similar ground.

A method helps enormously here. Check one attribute at a time across the sequence: shape, count, shading, rotation, position. Isolating attributes turns a cluttered image into three or four small questions, each of which is easy. Trying to see the whole rule at once is how candidates lose ninety seconds on a single item.

Verbal Reasoning as a separate instrument

Verbal Reasoning is a wider SHL cognitive instrument rather than a standard component of Verify G+. In the SHL Verify Verbal Reasoning test, you read a short passage and judge statements as True, False or Cannot Say based only on the text.

That third option carries most of the marks people lose. “Cannot Say” means the passage does not contain enough information to decide, regardless of what you happen to know about the subject. Candidates with strong general knowledge often mark a statement True because it is true in the real world, when the passage never actually supports it.

A related instrument, the SHL Reading Comprehension test, uses slightly longer texts with multiple-choice questions asking you to identify the main point, a key detail or the correct conclusion, again under a strict time limit.

Since the corroborated Verify G+ description identifies Numerical, Deductive and Inductive Reasoning only, treat Verbal Reasoning as part of your preparation solely when the employer’s invitation specifies it, or when you are sitting the General Ability Screen.

The rest of the Verify range

Beyond the four families above, SHL’s Verify range includes several instruments that appear in technical and operational recruitment. Mechanical Comprehension assesses understanding of physical principles such as levers, gears and pressure, and is listed separately from General Ability. Spatial Reasoning appears as its own Verify assessment with its own employment-level categories, and is common where a role involves visualising objects and their movement.

Two speed and accuracy instruments also sit in the range. The Checking Test presents information to be compared against a source under severe time pressure, with one consulted source reporting 25 questions in four to five minutes. The multiple-choice formats run to different numbers. The Verification Test

Personality and Behavioural Assessments in the Same Invitation

Cognitive assessments rarely travel alone. If your invitation includes a second or third component, it is usually a personality questionnaire or a behavioural assessment, and these follow different rules.

The Occupational Personality Questionnaire, known as the OPQ and in its main form as the OPQ32, measures individual working preferences and workplace behaviours rather than ability. The OPQ is untimed, and one source describes a version with 104 items rated on a Likert scale. Estimates of how long candidates take to finish vary, but there is no clock stopping you.

Because the OPQ32 is not an ability test, there is no right answer to optimise. What it does reward is consistency. On the behavioural side, the Situational Judgement Test presents realistic work scenarios and asks you to rate or rank possible responses. An SJT is not a general knowledge test: it is calibrated against the behaviours the employer values, often through a competency framework. Realistic Job Previews sit in the same category, giving candidates a picture of the role while gathering information about their responses to it. For an SJT, the useful preparation is not practice questions but context. Read the role description and the organisation’s stated values, then answer as someone already performing that job well, rather than as someone trying to appear maximally decisive or maximally collaborative in every single scenario.

Once you internalise that, the question “what percentage do I need to pass?” stops making sense. The relevant question is where you sit against everyone else in the norm group.

The norm group

A norm group is the reference population your performance is measured against. It is not the general public, and it is not the other applicants sitting the same day. It is a defined comparison group, typically aligned to an employment level such as graduate, junior manager, junior customer contact or administrator.

This is why the same raw performance can produce different percentiles in different processes. Compared against a graduate norm group, a given score sits in one place. That level of detail is worth knowing about. A pattern of blank answers at the end of the assessment reads as a pacing problem. A pattern of incorrect answers spread evenly reads as an accuracy problem. The report gives a recruiter enough to distinguish the two.

What the Recruiter Can Interpret, and Why Role Context Matters

The number that decides your progression is not printed on your screen. It sits in the employer’s hiring criteria, and it moves from role to role.

Assessments are chosen for the role

Employers select aptitude assessments by evaluating the skills the role genuinely requires. SHL’s own material describes organisations going through a careful evaluation of the job before selecting the best aptitude tests, so that the chosen instruments measure the aptitude to learn the skills that matter most in that job.

SHL assessments are also customisable, allowing employers to target different competencies depending on what they are hiring for. In practice, this means a technical trade and an administrative role in the same organisation can be screened with different instruments, different norm groups and different thresholds.

According to one consulted source, employers favour SHL assessments for four main reasons: they are quick to administer across large applicant volumes, they provide a standardised and consistent evaluation that reduces bias, they are built on research intended to be predictive of job performance, and they can be customised to the competencies of a specific role.

Employment-level comparison groups

For candidates applying into structured entry pathways with multiple trades or streams, this is the practical consequence: the same assessment result can qualify you for one stream and fall short for another, because the streams are benchmarked differently. If a recruiter has published or will confirm the target for your preferred trade, that is the number worth knowing.

What the recruiter sees

The recruiter receives the candidate assessment report rather than a bare pass or fail flag. With a skill-level breakdown, a count of correct, incorrect and blank responses, completion times and a comparison against other applicants, the report supports a more nuanced read than a single percentile alone.

That works in your favour more often than people assume. A candidate who scores solidly on Deductive Reasoning and Inductive Reasoning but drops marks on Numerical Reasoning is a recognisable, trainable profile, and for some roles it is exactly the right one.

Test Day: Platform, Conditions and Rules

SHL assessments are almost always taken online through the TalentCentral portal. Most employers send a unique link by email with a deadline in the range of three to seven days, according to one consulted source. The critical constraint is that you cannot pause the timer once you begin. There is no break, no save and resume, and no allowance for interruptions. Choose a slot when you will not be disturbed, close everything else, and tell anyone in the house that you are unavailable for the next hour.

On aids, the same source specifies that a calculator is permitted for the Numerical Reasoning assessment, either the on-screen calculator provided or your own physical one, while no aids are permitted for Verbal and Inductive assessments. Regarding monitoring, not every SHL assessment is described as using screen recording. Getting this wrong is expensive. Preparing for a multiple-choice Numerical Reasoning tempo of 16 questions in 20 minutes, then sitting an Interactive version of 10 questions in 18 minutes, means you will rush questions that were designed to be worked through.

Step two: use SHL’s own material first

SHL provides example questions and full-length practice tests through its candidate preparation pages, covering several assessment types including Numerical, Inductive and Verbal Reasoning. The mobile-enabled Interactive practice tests are particularly worth using, because they let you experience the drag and drop format before it counts.

SHL is explicit about the limits of this material. Its practice assessments do not attempt to provide an exact experience of the assessment you may be asked to complete; they provide a similar testing experience in terms of question types and formats. SHL also notes that the difficulty of a practice test may not exactly match the difficulty of the live assessment you receive.

Note as well that not every practice test returns a report. According to SHL’s practice test descriptions, the Interactive general ability practice test does not currently provide a report, while the Interactive Numerical Reasoning practice test does.

Step three: practise under the real clock

Time pressure is the single biggest factor in performance on these assessments, and it is also the most trainable. Practise with a timer from the first session rather than doing untimed sets and adding pressure later. Aim to finish each set with time in hand.

Two habits pay for themselves. First, review the explanation for every question, including the ones you answered correctly, because a correct answer reached the slow way is a time problem waiting to happen on a harder item. Second, mix question types within a practice set, since the live assessment shuffles Numerical, Deductive and Inductive items rather than presenting them in blocks.

Build a personal time budget too. Roughly a minute per question on standard G+, roughly a minute and a half on the Interactive version. If an item exceeds your budget by more than about fifty percent, answer with your best guess and move on. There is no negative marking, so a guess costs nothing and an abandoned question costs a mark.

Step four: work with realistic material

Any practice question you use outside SHL’s own material should be treated as a style-based example rather than a reproduced official question. Nobody publishing practice content has access to live SHL items, and any claim otherwise is worth ignoring.

That is not a limitation as long as the format and timing are right. What transfers from practice to the live assessment is method: how you scan a data table, how you isolate attributes in a sequence, how you handle a Cannot Say judgement, and how quickly you decide to move on.

Two question styles come out of a table like this. The simplest is a direct lookup: which product returns the highest profit per unit? Reading the final column gives Harmony II at 5.1 USD. That item is testing whether you can find the right column under pressure, nothing more.

The second style requires a calculation on top of the lookup. For Serenity, profit per unit as a proportion of sale price is 3.4 divided by 12.5, which is 27.2 percent. Notice what the method looks like: identify the two figures, set up one operation, calculate once. Candidates lose time by computing values for every row before reading what the question actually asks.

A third style, common in the live assessments, layers a comparison on top: which two products differ least in profit per unit, or what happens to the ranking if material costs rise by a fixed percentage. The same discipline applies. Read the question first, then go to the table for only the numbers you need.

Step five: prepare the non-cognitive components too

If your invitation includes an OPQ32 or a Situational Judgement Test, spend a short amount of time on those as well. For the Occupational Personality Questionnaire, that means reading through the role description so you are answering with the job in mind, and then responding consistently and at pace since it is untimed. For an SJT, it means understanding the competencies the employer is recruiting against.

Neither of these rewards heavy drilling. Both punish inconsistency and second-guessing.

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

A short list of the errors that appear most often, drawn from the way these assessments are built.

Leaving questions blank when time runs out is the most avoidable. With no negative marking, an unanswered item is a guaranteed zero while a guess is a real chance at a mark.

Preparing for the wrong version comes second. The gap between 10 questions in 18 minutes and 16 questions in 20 minutes is enough to change how you approach every single item.

Treating a percentage as a percentile is third. Answering 70 percent of items correctly and sitting at the 70th percentile are unrelated statements, and only one of them is what the recruiter sees.

Over-investing in one difficult question is fourth, and it is the habit that most often turns a good candidate into an average result. The adaptive design means hard items appear precisely because you are doing well, so abandoning one is not a failure signal.

Starting the assessment in a poor environment is last, and entirely preventable. The timer does not pause for a doorbell.
